Information about Sendai

Sendai, located just 90 minutes from Tokyo Station by bullet train "Shinkansen," offers a perfect blend of samurai history and breathtaking coastal scenery.

Sendai, known as the "City of Trees," was founded in 1600 by the legendary warlord Date Masamune. Visitors can explore his legacy at the Sendai Castle Ruins, where a statue of the "One-Eyed Dragon" overlooks the city, or visit the ornate Zuihoden Mausoleum. Food lovers must try Gyutan (grilled beef tongue), the city's signature dish, along with Zunda (sweet edamame paste). In May, when the city's zelkova trees are cloaked in fresh green leaves, and Sendai is at its most beautiful, the city's early summer tradition, the Sendai Aoba Festival, takes place. The Sendai Aoba Festival features a parade of samurai and the traditional "Suzume Odori" dance performed with colorful fans, filling the town with energy. This festival honors Date Masamune, the founder of Sendai.

A short distance from Sendai, Matsushima Bay is celebrated for its scenic beauty, featuring over 260 pine-covered islands visible from a sightseeing cruise. Attractions include Zuiganji Temple and Godaido Hall. The area is also known for its fresh oysters.
